Contracts are a conversation

We’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about contracts.  I mean obviously, it’s part and parcel of what we do! Quite often we hear “well I’ve just signed what’s been put on the table because it’s easier” and we get it, the words contract negotiation can sound scary but remember it’s really just a conversation. This is your friendly reminder that it’s OK to say:-
  • Please can we change this? – For example, please can we add in some words about charging interest on late payment because I’ve had some issues in the past with clients not paying on time.
  • I don’t really understand what you are trying to say here – This is something that even seasoned contract managers ask, and it’s often a reflection on poor drafting than your understanding!
  • Please can we take this out because I don’t think it applies to what we are doing? – Remember that the worst thing that they can say is no and you can still make a decision about whether it adds in too much risk or not.
