We’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about contracts. I mean obviously, it’s part and parcel of what we do!
Quite often we hear “
well I’ve just signed what’s been put on the table because it’s easier” and we get it, the words contract negotiation can sound scary but remember it’s really just a conversation.
This is your friendly reminder that it’s OK to say:-
- Please can we change this? – For example, please can we add in some words about charging interest on late payment because I’ve had some issues in the past with clients not paying on time.
- I don’t really understand what you are trying to say here – This is something that even seasoned contract managers ask, and it’s often a reflection on poor drafting than your understanding!
- Please can we take this out because I don’t think it applies to what we are doing? – Remember that the worst thing that they can say is no and you can still make a decision about whether it adds in too much risk or not.
